How to Access the Main Duct

06/25/2014 Back To Blog

When it comes to HVAC maintenance, it is a relatively straight forward process. Home air duct cleaning often involves simply cleaning the vents as well as the air filter so that the dust and all of the grime don’t build up and cause more problems in the future. However, while it is relatively easy to utilize a vacuum cleaner in order to remove the dust from the shallow area of the vents – using a brush to do a little home air filter cleaning – accessing the main duct is a completely different case entirely. In fact it is not recommended to try because of how difficult it can be to access and how high the risk is of damaging the ducts.

However, if these main ducts are not cleaned at some point or another, the ventilation system will still start spewing out dust regardless of whether or not you cleaned the filter or vacuumed the entryways of the vent. After all, the entryways will not be where the dust collects – it will be in the main duct system. Accessing it will not be easy, but it is completely possible.

The main ducts are more easily accessed through basement registers

Fortunately for you, utilizing the basement registers will allow you easier access to the main ducts. Duct systems are almost never without these types of registers, so make sure that you go through these first before you start working on removing the caps that hold the main ducts together. When you find the registers, simply remove them. Upon doing so you will see how easy it will be to fit your vacuum’s hose through and into the main ducts.

As a matter of fact, you can even point a flashlight to see where exactly the dirt collected. Keep this in mind and you will always have an easy way to access the main duct for air duct maintenance. Did you ever imagine being able to do such a thorough air duct cleaning in record time?
